Meet Hilal Lashuel – RDI Advisor to the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation

Dr. Hilal Lashuel is a globally recognized neuroscientist, academic, and biotechnology innovator with an illustrious career dedicated to advancing neurodegenerative disease research and biomedical innovation. He is also the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of ND BioSciences, Professor Emeritus at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), and a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum.


Dr. Lashuel earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the City University of New York and completed his Ph.D. at Texas A&M University and The Scripps Research Institute. His postdoctoral journey included pivotal research roles at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was later appointed as an Instructor in Neurology. In 2005, he joined EPFL, founding and directing the Laboratory of Molecular and Chemical Biology of Neurodegeneration, leading groundbreaking research into the molecular mechanisms of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.


Beyond academia, Dr. Lashuel has played a central role in shaping Qatar’s biomedical landscape. As the former Executive Director of the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), he contributed to national healthcare strategies and served on numerous key committees and advisory boards, including the Qatar Cancer Research Partnership, Qatar Biobank, Qatar Metabolic Institute, and Weill Cornell Medical College Joint Advisory Board.


Recognized among the “100 Outstanding Personalities” in French-speaking Switzerland by L’Hebdo magazine, Dr. Lashuel continues to inspire through his scientific leadership, innovation, and commitment to global health research.
